Everybody thought gravel traps were going to be such a great safety measure, turns out that if a car hits them sideways, they flip -- as in this pic -- and if they hit them straight on, the braking is ineffective. Now they're being replaced with paved runoffs...

#1, Makes sense. I mean, the cars were DESIGNED to be driven on paved surfaces, not dirt or gravel. A gravel pit may slow the car down a bit, but more paved surface would probably be safer.

#9, I hope the paved run-off surface is a rougher (i.e., speed limiting) style of pavement though...to discourage using the run-off area to take the turn faster...
