#55, I can't afford that yet either. Which is why I have a GM credit card to earn cash off! Hopefully when it's time for me to cash it in, there will be something NICE to get. Checvy has that stupid bar on everything, Olds has been flushed, Cadillac is hideous, Saturns are plastic. That leaves Buick or Pontiac. It looks like I'll get another Pontiac! :)

#57, Yep, the reason they rev that low is more than just reliability though, you can't trun a conventional propeller beyond about 3K, if you try, the tips of the prop blades begin to go supersonic, and will actualy loose thier "bite" on the air

Subaru makes a plane version of it's 2.2L 4 cyl that's been run through a reduction gear so it will turn the prop that speed

#62, HELL NO!!!! (Ass-tek)

I do like the Vibe though since I might have some baby crap to haul around by then. :O

My wife and I really like Grand Ams though as long as they don't screw up the styling, but it's getting a restyling in 2005. I am keeping my fingers crossed. A GP is not out of the question, but I've never been one to spend any exhorbitant amounts on a car.

#64, Boat engines are similar--they're designed to peak around 4400 RPM or so (or at least ours are). My parents' boat would really upset the riceboys--it has a pair of Mercruiser 4.3s (based on the GM 4.3!) with 4bbl carbs.

l0w t3ck!

#49 and you're telling me that 5500rpm isnt high for a V8? it will last even less at that rpm than a 4-banger at 6500

#65, they are getting a restyling in late 2003 (for the 2004 model year)

same with the Malibu - both based off the new Saab 9-3.

#57 4-bangers are designed for high rpm though, they will last a lot longer at 5500 rpm than a 5.7-liter chevy engine will

#70, They are "designed" in that the rings, valves, rods, etc are made of stronger matriels and machined to closer tolerances, the fact still remains, generaly, a high-reving engine stresses itself more than a low-rever, and a chevy wont' have to wind past 5K very offten, whereas some 4's don't hit thier powerband untill they are in the high 5's

#72, couldn't you stroke an I4 to get torque?

yeah then it would redline low...my 2.5-liter nissan engine redlined at 6200 and made 180 lb-ft at 4000rpm

#74, Yeah, but lengthening the rod would stress it, and induce piston "wobble" which is why large displacement AND high rev is hard to make work together, you kinda have to choose one or the other, kinda like you can build an engine for low end torque, or high end speed, but not really both
