#16, rear mounted transaxle?

don't you mean rear mounted transmission? (C5's)

I dunno, some documents say transaxle, some say transmission...I always figured they were exchangeable...I'm sure there's a difference somewhere, I just don't know what it is...

#22, transaxle generally means a transmission with a built in differential, a la almost all front wheel drive cars and most mid engined cars.

Right, that's what the C5 should have then..., same with the Beetle, 911, etc...

#24, actually it's very unusual to have a rear transaxle on a front engine car.

#22, transaxels are usually found on cars with engines traversely mounted (FWD cars or certain mid-engined cars with traversley mounted engines over the drivewheels = Fiero/MR2) with or where and engine is sitting longitudinally mounted over the drivewheels (70's Olds Toranado or mid-engined Ferrari's = longitudinally mounted engine with transaxels)

C5 corvette's have their transmission located behind the seats and right before the differential in hopes of balencing the weight of the car and improving leg room for the driver/passenger (no narrowing legroom).

#25, Any idea whether the transmission on the C5 is separate from the diff, or if it's actually a transaxle? I'm also wondering about the Porsche 928, which I think implemented something similar for the sake of maintaining a good weight distribution.

#26, yeah, the driveshaft is actually between the motor and the front of the transmission, and the tranny is hooked directly into the differential.

#28, i belive the transmission and diff in a C5 are seperate (say in case you wanted to change the diff but keep the tranny)
