hey i got a question for you guys.....does 442 mean [4-barrel carbureator, 4-on-the-floor, and dual exhaust], or is it [400 cubic inches, 4-on-the-floor, and dual exhaust]? or something

Sort of both. When the 442 package was released (in 1965, IIRC) it stood for:

4 speed
4 barrel
2 exhaust

But the following year a 3 speed automatic was introduced, so the official meaning became

400
4 barrel
2 exhaust

Then, in 1970, the 455 was introduced. It then became

455
4 barrel
2 exhaust

Then there was the 442 "package" in the early '80s Cutlasses...No one knows what the hell 442 stood for on those.

#4, Addendum: When mutli-carburation was offered for 1966, the "4 barrel" was actually changed to "4 passenger." This official meaning for the second "4" stuck through the rest of the model's production, even after they went back to 4 barrels.

#4, in reference to the original question regarding the 80s ones..

The Calais 442 was Quad4, 4 valves per cylinder (I think, since Quad 4 was a 16V), and 2 cams (the Quad4 was a Twin Cam engine I believe.

The older G-bodies went back to the 4 speed, 4 barrel, and 2 exhaust
