Description:
Oldsmobile Cutlass w/ the W-31 options package that beefed up the stock 350 powerplant w/ bigger valves, functioning ram air, aluminum intake and other stuff
Could hang w/ a 445 on everything but the drag strip in the hands of a good driver, but, since the W-31 package itself was only marginaly cheaper than the big block itself, it wasn't a very popular option |

#8, The meaning changed with the years. When the 442 package was introduced in 1964, it stood for:
4 barrel / 4 speed / 2 exhaust
For 1965, an automatic was added was an option, which wasn't a 4 speed. At which point the name became:
4 barrel / 4 passenger / 2 exhaust
It changed again in 1966, with the introduction of triple two barrel carburators. But since the car had a 400 cubic inch engine, it was an easy fix:
400 ci / 4 passenger / 2 exhaust
In 1970, the 455 was introduced. Naturally, it was changed again, and held this meaning through at least 1973:
455 ci / 4 passenger / 2 exhaust
Don't ask about the mid '70s and mid '80s 442s. I think they were just given the name arbitrarily, and it no longer had a meaning. |
