Description:
I went on a little exploration (read: trespassing) today, and explored what appears to be some sort of abandoned motel. Photos from inside to follow.

So recently along highway 145 south (the road I travel to get to the TV station), there's been a lot of logging going on, and to my surprise on the top of a hill along the highway there is a collection of light-colored brick buildings barely visible.

Since my classes were canceled at 9 o'clock, and it was a clear, cool morning (and I happened to have a camera with me), I decided to drive up into this place and see what the deal with it is. After accessing the long, rough driveway you see in the main picture from a side road, I see this: An abandoned travel trailer on the right, and an old white house on the left, apparently with something just beyond that.

The trailer had Mississippi tags that expired in October of '94. I couldn't see in it and didn't try the door.

The house had a screened-in front porch, with part of the screen missing. After sticking my head in, I felt an overwhelming need to wash my hair.

One of the house's side windows was broken out, so I stuck the camera in there, too.

Continuing around the corner, I was met with a concrete lot lined with a row of 10 "cabins", each with a window in the side and a small garage. They were numbered 1-10 all the way down to a large structure at the end with two garages and a collapsed roof.

Another view of the row of cabins.

Up-close of the building at the end.

An old rusty thermometer on the side of the end building. Faint lettering still visible advertised the name of some logging outfit.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/bbcc7809.jpg

I couldn't get in the large building (and would be nervous too, anyway, thanks to the unstable roof), but I stuck my camera through one of the partially ajar garage doors and took this blurry snapshot.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/ee4525f0.jpg

I decided to explore one of the cabins. Picking between 1 and 10, I decided to go with 5.

Number over the door.

The garage of number 5. The only door to access the interior on all of the cabins seemed to be the one in the garage.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/84a362dc.jpg

Coming into cabin 5, I was met with a bedroom with a broken mirror creating an otherwordly shimmering reflection on the wall.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...84/5984c595.jpg

A bathroom, with a toilet and sink, and a simple closet made up the cabin.

Where the bed used to be. Just a frame now.

And finally, rounding up the tour...

After leaving 5, I tried 6.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...ayofnumber6.jpg

...which had a severely rotten ceiling.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...ofinnumber6.jpg

Garage number 8 was a bit flooded and had a bad roof, so I didn't go in.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...geofnumber8.jpg

At the end of the day, I went in nearly all the cabins except: 9 and 10, which were as bad as number 8, and the travel trailer was blocking number 1. They were mostly the same thing, except I found some building supplies in 3....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...ithsupplies.jpg

....and this creepy broken (burnt?) mirror in number 2 that gave me the creeps just looking at it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/0...rorincabin2.jpg

FIN.

Very. It's so quiet there it's downright surreal, even with the highway going past on the hill beneath it. It's definitely one place I wouldn't want to be at night.

I can't figure out exactly what the place was, since I for one have never seen a motel with garages on the individual cabins.

There used to be this old creepy shack at the edge of the woods near my grandpa's property in Boyne Falls. There was a big window on the north wall and you could see inside. There was nothing but an old matress, some waterlogged magazines, a long dead flashlight and some aluminum (food?) cans. It was torn down a few years ago, gave me the heebie jeebies big time. Haven't thought about it until you posted these pics.

#10, Nothing here like that lasts very long. The longest lasting is near travellodge where I worked. It wasn't creepy just boarded up. I don't think the city tolerates abondonned buildings. The bank of montreal closed down town, became a homeless squatters castle. It lasted 2 years and is now a hole for a new condo/shop building. Actually there is something that has been abandonned for a long time, Some old department story has been sitting mostly abandonned for 15 years. It had a Stitches until ~2001. Now it's just sitting there. Nice building, lots of space. Should really be made into Condos.

#11, In the suburbs there's not much of anything creepy save for a burnt out house or two, but they're usually refurbished or torn down with the year. But in the rural areas there's always some old barn or farm house just sitting around waiting for the city to bother spending money on a wrecking crew. I remember there being a really frightening two story victorian house near the main drag in Boyne Falls, next time I'm up there I'll definitely take a few pcis.

The historic section of downtown Meridian has a lot of cool abandoned buildings. Right at the edge of town is the old Hotel Meridian, which says "European Design: Fireproof" in huge letters on the side. The place has been abandoned at least since the late '70s, but is very well-preserved. I understand that the city has bought the property to turn into apartments, so maybe I'll go by there and see if I can get in sometime before they renovate it.

Only trouble is, downtown Meridian is not the place to just go wandering around in....

#13, Crap, I just remembered downtown Detroit, my brother goes to college down there, later this month I'll head down with him and snap a few pics of the abandoned hotels and, if I can avoid the hobos, I'll snap some shots of the old Detroit train station.

#14, I think it's pretty cool. You can't beat that old-world hyperbole.

For the record, the "fireproof" thing actually refers to the fact that it was one of the few buildings at the time that had an internal sprinkler system.

#16, Ah, gotcha. I figure with enough gas / lighter fluid, nothing is fireproof :P
