#1, Yeah, something around 60hp. When stock.

Are they truly bad cars, or is it just anti-hype that makes them seem bad?

Poor Canadians had to suffer with these for a time, I've never seen one there, though.

#3, These were Fiat-licensed cars built by Russians for Russians. The build quality varies a lot, but the idea behind these Ladas were to provide a simple, cheap transportation that could withstand severe climate and rough roads with minimum maintenance. The best Lada would be created with a Finnish body (almost completely rustproof) and Belgian wiring harness (Bosch). After that you just drop in a Fiat DOHC engine and you're ready to go ;)

#5, A "normal" Lada can have some rust or none at all, it will probably have a 1.3 or 1.5 SOHC engine, the interior will be totally shit but the ride will be quite comfortable, seats big and soft, quite a lot of space and civilised handling (live axle with anti-roll bar and a Panhard). You'll also have the feel of driving something much heavier than it really is because the Lada screams "cheap" and "tough". You'll simply won't care as much about the things you run over or bump into.

#6, so its not exactly horrible, but media misconception? I could understand having one for budget rallies, and weekend dirt racers.

#7, Lada is a decent car for the price. Shitty but tough.

#4, The last Lada dealer here closed about 2 years ago I think. I still see some Nivas and Samaras in decent condition.

#10, Samaras were pretty unremarkable as they were not as tough as the 210x series but just as shitty. Nivas are superb light off-roaders though.
