The older L03 (305) has only 170 HP. The later Caprices with the LT1 (350) are a little better at 260. The really hot ones have Corvette aftermarket parts installed.

The car is nice enough, but it needs an engine transplant.

The later Caprices look like the Impala with the rear wheel opening cut out. While that looks better, it makes them more expensive as people buy them to put fake impala badges on them.

Uh, yeah, Make that a lot better.

Why didn't they use the LB9 305 that they used in the Manual transmission F-bodies? Those had 220 HP and 295 lb ft of torque.

For that matter, why didn't they use the 350? I don't understand GM's thinking. (Or lack thereof.)

i'm actually debating whether or not to swap the 305 for the turbocharged 350 I have in my '86 Chevy. I was rearended on the freeway, but I can't decide whether to keep the truck and fix the backend or just scrap the truck and put the engine in the Caprice. choices!

My '84 Camaro has it's original 305. It may not be very fast, but it's surprisingly reliable. I bought it back in '98 with 105k miles on it, has 130k now, and so far I've only had to replace a water pump (right after I got it) and the alternator (a couple of weeks ago). I'm planning some mods for the 305, hoping to get at least 300 hp out of it.

yeah, reliability is the big thing with cop cars because they run about 12 hours a day for a full year. don't want em breaking down.

I've got an '84 Cutlass Supreme with a 305 it's not quick but when i want to light 'em up i have no problems, too bad this wasn't an Impala SS from that generation, those things are sweat too bad all Caprices/Cutlasses/Roadmasters didn't have the LT1
