I love old skool rat rodz (to the point I have a subscription to Ol' Skool Rodz) and oddly enough I actually kind of like this. Wouldn't build it myself but...

#2, I just can't get into it at all.

Old-style primered jalopies are fine, but these people who put a '40 Ford truck cab on a '32 Ford frame and combine it with a '46 International grille and an exposed rear axle right behind the cab, then lower it until it's 2 inches from the ground, stick in a smoking Pontiac 326 with zoomie headers that stick up higher than the roof, then use soup cans for an intake (with the labels still attached), a beer keg for a gas tank, and a salad fork for an accelerator pedal....they they deliberately rust the whole thing, drill fake "rust holes" in it, and leave every welding seam as sloppy and exposed as possible.....that whole scene is just silly to me.

I can agree with the whole deliberate rust thing, that to me is just as bad as putting fake second muffler on a V6 mustang to make everyone think its a GT. Beyond that I really like the mixing of different cars because thats how it used to be done, you just worked with whatever you could drag out of the local junk yard. There's just something to be said about a home-built, low budget monster.

I agree... it's crazy enough to be awesome. The german WWII helmet is a nice detail

Except that a lot of these guys today are probably spending lots of money to replicate the low-budget, junkyard-sourced look.

But then again it costs $80,000 to pick up a clean, restomodded '57 Bel Air on Torq Thrusts around here so you can look like every other overweight Hawaiian-shirted car guy at [insert car show name here]. Usually the rat rods I see are built by 20-something greaser types in Dickies with wannabe-50s-styled girlfriends sporting overly red lipstick and hair dyed black.

I like this, and I like some examples of the styles mentioned in this thread. However, I like em if they're authentic, non megabucks vehicles. I think Skid posted a Chevy that was a fiberglass body with painted rust-- now that's just stupid.

Part of what bothers me about "rat rods" is that they aren't really as traditional as they make out. Nobody in the 1950s lowered their cars that much, chopped their cars that low, deliberately left rust holes in them while they were doing welding already, or used boat propellers as radio knobs. And anybody that did would have been laughed at.
