Description:
My "new" car, a 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix. Saw it for sale and just KNEW I was going to have to buy it, considering it looks about 10 years younger than it's age. |

Well, believe it or not, they still make and stock OEM exhaust for these, because I'm having a new one put on. They still make and stock the carb rebuild kits, because I'm having the Q-junk rebuilt, and, they still stock the hoses and vacuum lines, because, well, you can see where this is going...... then I need to hit the bodyshop for a buff-out, I only WISH it was still this shiny, but, 5 years of no garage has oxidized that paint pretty bad and the pinstripes are now pink and coming off..... |

Bam, good until 2017
https://scontent-iad3-1.xx.fbcdn.ne...381040068_o.jpg
Needed For Inspection: New Exhaust (pipe/muffler/cat) New headlight wires (2/4 too dim) New windshield squirter motor (old one dead)
Needed For Basic Runnability : Carb rebuilt/cleaned, new cap/plugs/wires (fix miss) New Vacuum Lines (same) New P/S pump hose (crack/leak) New Battery (old one dead) New Choke Module (diaphragm has hole) New Valve Cover Gaskets (noticed old ones were 80% gasket, 20% RTV)
Pending - Replace Radiator, intermittent leak, probably full of rust/sediment that occasionally covers up the pinhole where it's leaking, it's coming off the brace on the rad side and running down the airdam. Cajole bodyshop manager into letting me borrow his industrial-strength buffer and get rid of that oxidation. Have them re-pinstripe it. Paint new bumper filler panels I've had in backseat for years......

#24, Yeah, first time I drove it w/ the tops off, wind got under it...... And the hood's looked like that since I bought it, hasn't gotten any worse, oddly.... you just can't see it in that first photo since it's way over on the other side. It's the only car I've ever owned that's rusted out there, to the exclusion of everything else. Drove it down to "E" to get rid of the old gas and stopped to fill up today, got my first offer to buy from a guy filling his truck. :)

#25, Are you gonna sell it? I think this car is really nice, and I think I've mentioned it before, but I don't see many of these. These are my favorite of the A/Gs, with the 2+2 ranking just below the regular Grand Prixs. |

#26, Nah, she's mine, especially after the $ I just dumped to get her out of the reserve fleet :) The guy who wanted to buy it specifically said he was a Pontiac enthusiast and hadn't seen one that good "For a long time" I felt REALLY bad having to break his heart. Despite the rarity, they're dirt cheap, every one I see on eBay is going for $5,000 tops, even in restored condition with all the options.....

#27, Is it because the demand isn't there, or is because people don't really know about these cars? |

#28, That's common for ANY car from 1970 - 1980, not a Mustang/Trans AM? Then it's worth $5,000 restored, or $2,500 rough. |

#29, I suppose, but up here in the rust belt, idiots want at least $4,000 for any running "classic" they think will attract either bros, donk ryders or hipsters. :( |

New Issue, wipers don't work (unless you hit the "wash" button, then they do, so the MOTOR is good, the control switch is bad) so a new switch is on the way (thank goodness NOS ones still survive on eBay), this one has the delay option, which is even RARER, most were off-slow-SPASTIC three speeds...... |

Okay, this thing is kind of creeping me out now....... one full week back on the road........ and, it hasn't used ONE DROP of oil, the dipstick, even when warm, reads right on the "FULL" line.... that doesn't happen on 30+ year old cars. Also, ALL the courtesy lights inside, still work. Not a single one has quit... that never happens either. Checked the trunk yesterday, and forgot, the factory storage bags for the T-tops are still there, and the rear bumper panel trim pieces were in there too....

Whelp, I think she just ate her timing chain..... thank God it was in the garage trying to start it when that happened, not on the road. Gotta stop by the engine shop tomorrow and see about parts/kit availability for 4.9L Pontiacs. Start the clock gentlemen, I'm going to set a personal record for yanking/replacing the motor. |
