Description:
My "new" car, a 1978 Pontiac Grand Prix. Saw it for sale and just KNEW I was going to have to buy it, considering it looks about 10 years younger than it's age. |

Weird year for the G body? I know they made this style till 1987, but other than the 2+2 were there any "sporty" versions, or was this a luxury-oriented coupe solely? |

#6, I think this would be an A-body.
Is it 301-powered? |

#7, It's the first of the G-Bodies, the A body was a casualty of the CAFE regulations and discontinued after 77. It does indeed have the 301 w/ a 4BB carb and a 3 speed auto. It's an LJ, which was the "Luxury" trim level, so it's loaded (for it's time) with power seats, power windows, power locks, rear defrost, bucket seats, and T-tops..... |

#9, Okay, so it's an A-body on paper, but going by wheelbase and design setup, it's a G-body, okay, that makes sense, because everything I could find said 78' was a downsizing year, I just assumed they dropped the A alltogether at that point |

Back when I was more active with GMs they were usually referred to as A/G bodies, as they interchange. I used to own an `81 Cutlass Calais that was still considered an A Body, usually referred to as an A body special, as that was the year they made the change to G. Extremely confusing and a moot point as again, they are the same thing. |

My Dad saw it for the first time today, he's already dubbed it "The Mafia Car"
After a little shakedown cruise, I think I need a minor tune up, either it needs new plugs/wires or a carb cleaning, or both, there's just a tad of hesitation under throttle. And the oil gauge is dead, possible bad sending unit, possible bad wire. Other than that, nothing major noted.

#17, I hate you. Damn son. Nice steal :D
You should get a 2+2 and an earlier '70s one to go with it. :P |

So, finally got a plate for the car and took it on a longer test drive.
-Exhaust is shot, leaks all over and sounds like an old Chevy truck
-Oil leak out the back, bottom of the oil pan is dry, but there's blowback all over the transmission and cross member, and it's flying directly onto the cat, so there's a nice cloud of smoke every time you stop the car. PCV appears to be clogged, replaced that, we'll see what happens
-Front lower grille half (that little section in the bumper) fell out while driving, and I crushed it under the rear wheels, d'ho. Well, off to Ebay....
