This is the first car I can remember -- we had one when I was just a little kid. It was a 4dr like this one only pink and white. We put about a gazillion miles on it since we always drove on trips and it finally rusted out and we got a '62 Buick Invicta wagon to replace it...

Yep. Three portholes is a Special, four is a Roadmaster. The guy who owned the gas station where we went had a solid black '57 Roadmaster. I can still remember when my dad and me and him went fishing and he drove us up there in his car -- that thing ran like a scalded cat...

Nothing like a burbling, cushy, 3 ton 80mph battering ram...I love these cars.

So how many cubic inches does it take to move this thing? I'm guessing it's got a 455 and tops out at 83mph.

The 455 didn't come around until 1970. This was the first year for the OHV V8 (previous models had straight 8s), and I don't know how many cubes they were (in the 300-400 range, I think), but they all had between 200-300 horsepower and the slowest ones topped off at about 100 mph.

#10, That's what seatbelts are for. Those were the days when you either buckled up, OR ELSE!

#11, Cars didn't have seatbelts back then...glove compartment doors were guillotines, dash mounted keys were blades, and the steering wheel was a spear... isn't that lovely?

The glove box offten popped open in a crash, and the edge would take off a hand or head, and the igniton was in the dash, where your kneecap would go into in a crash, and slice that open, and the knobs and sutch were made of metal, and would crack open your skull, I"ve seen X-ray photos of 50's car crash victims with RADIO KNOBS imbedded in thier heads, it's brutal

#12, Yes, cars had seatbelts in 1955. Personally, though, I don't give a shit about safety. If I wrecked this car, I'd want to die.

#16, Ironicaly, when Ford offered them, a lot of people reacted with "What? by putting belts in, are you saying this car isn't safe?"

#14, No, not all cars had seatbelts in '55, in fact, I think it was rather rare... My father's top-of-the-line '57 DeSoto Fireflite came with no seatbelts (still doesn't have 'em...the seats are flat vinyl benches...unless you're holding onto something, you slide across the seat in turns)

#18, I never said *all* of them did, I said "cars had seatbelts in 1955".
