Description:
Monster Garage Ford 1983 ambulance Wheelie Truck

You won't see this on ER: a 1983 Ford ambulance capable not only of accelerating from zero to 60 in five seconds, but also of rising into a full wheelie in the process.

Jesse and his team began the build by ripping into the fully equipped ambulance, tearing out cabinets, flooring and special instruments — and producing the biggest pile of junk in Monster Garage history. Next came the daunting task of pulling the motor and transmission from the front and installing it in the rear. With most of the truck's weight behind it, the rear axle would act like a fulcrum, enabling the front to rise when Jesse hit the gas.

It would take the next few days for the team to fabricate an internal, inverted chassis and mount the engine and tranny — facing backward — into a new structure. A custom-made V-drive gearbox, normally used in high-speed boats, was the critical linkage allowing the engine's power to turn back around to the rear axle. And it wasn't until the clock struck midnight on Day 6 that the team was able to swap out the aging stock motor with the primo 460-cubic-inch souped-up racing motor. But swap it they did, and the monster was finally ready and waiting for its challenge ... or was it?

During Jesse's trial run at Irwindale Speedway in Los Angeles, a fire broke out in the back of the ambulance. Fire crews and medics rushed to his aid, but Jesse waved them off, intent on fulfilling this monster's destiny. Under the constant threat of engine fire, Jesse easily won the race, then turned the track into his personal wheelie playground. It was a religious experience. In Jesse's own words: "I know now why God put me on this Earth — to pop wheelies!"
