#5, Actually...the more I look at it...the bigger it looks...it's just about the same HEIGHT as the Civic, but looks wider and longer. Remember, the Civic is tall for a car of its size.

I want a black hood on my (future) car. But it would be metal not carbon and matt black not shiney. Just like in the old days...

#8, Then whats the point? If you are going to make your car look stupid, you might as well make it have some purpose. I might get a cf hood for my car, but I will paint it.

#9, You don't get it, do you? Flat black hoods are sixties and seventies, the wildest era in automotive industry. 95% of 1960-1970 performance cars had flat black hoods: so I want one too. And it looks GOOD.
And don't get me started about saving weight. How much can you save, 10 kilos? OMG, 10 kilos less!!! OMG!!! Too bad fenders, quarterpanels and trunk lid are still metal, too bad the trim is still there, too bad the windows are still glass, too bad the pedals aren't drilled (it saves weight too!), etc.

#10, I didnt ask for your sarcasm. But, if you deal it, be prepared to take it back:

So you are going for this wonderful "performance look" on one of your Fiats? Is that what you are suggesting? Give me a break. I still think it looks stupid. Guess what else was popular in the 60s and 70s. Gassers. Not everything to come from that era is pure gold.

And as to the weight savings; when you have already done everything else, (i.e. build a bottom end, add turbo, gut interior, brake work, suspension, etc) every little bit counts for something. Little amounts of savings adds up to a lot in the end. So before you knock the weight savings, think about the end result.

#10, You're still just copying a look cuz it's "COOL!" and not because it has any benefits. THe flat black hoods of the muscle car years weren't normal ones painted black, they were fiberglass, it was done for weight savings, and only certain Mopars had them, the Challenger and the Super Bee come to mind, they were never standard equipement on any other mass-produced car

When someone, anyone, paints the hood of thier car black, in an attempt to just copy the look of a fast car, wihtout having a real reason to do it, then they're ricing

The hood is probaly one of the heaviest body panels on a car anyway, I'll bet the one on my Firebird weighs in at 70-80 pounds easy, if I can get a fiberglass one that only tips the scales at 25-30, that's 50 pounds Im' not forcing the motor to pull, and it adds up

#11, Hell, no, not the Fiat(s). They're (slow) "civilian" cars and would look stupid with a black hood. But if, IF I'll build a rally Ascona, Manta, Capri, Taunus or whatever 1970/1980 RWD car it will have it's long hood painted flat black. I dind't think about muscle cars and their hoods (I had no idea they weren't metal) I was rather thinking about race/rally cars from Europe which had their hoods painted flat black to prevent light reflexes (very much like aircraft):

Last I checked, flat/matte black hoods were originally for reduced glare, not OMGCOOL looks. I like the matte black hood on a Mustang Mach 1 or Torino Cobra or whatnot, but if you paint the whole hood flat black it looks like a replacement part you were too lazy to paint. On the Mach 1 and Torino, the whole hood wasn't painted black but a large part of it was.

And yes, LTR is right about the Mopars with their black fiberglass hoods. Personally, I prefer the Fords' paint treatments myself, it gives it a more finished look.

#14, I'll say this for Mopar, though: They did try to make the flat black hoods more pleasing to the eyes in the later cars. In the case of the Cuda AAR, the tops of the fenders and the stripes were also matte black, meaning the hood blended in better with the rest of the paint scheme.

But yeah, the 1970 Challenger "fresh air" hoods and the 1969 Super Bee and Road Runner 440+6s were a bit more function over form.
