My understanding is that the Saxo was to the British tuner crowd of the late '90s/early '00s as the Civic Hatchback was to the tuners here in America of the same era.

Hondas never quite caught on with those groups in the UK because Honda there has had a longtime reputation of being cars for pensioners/the elderly.

#9, Saxo and 106, particularly because they both came in smaller engine sizes. Civics were less common, and in a higher tax bracket, so not affordable to the younger crowd, as far as insurance was concerned.
