#17, it's not the first time that we knew who was responsable for a terrorist attack against americans, bin laden tried to blow them up once before for example, then there was the whole Iranian hostage thing.
edit: many people seem to forget we've gone through periods with much more terroist activity *looks in mcmunkee's direction*. It was however the first time they flew planes into anything (that I know of anyway)

#21, more terrorism yes... but not 3000 people dead in one day... time to do *something* about it other than sticking yer head in the sand.

Shame that our technique for dealing with it apparently involved suspending certain parts of the Constitution and instituting a whole new government agency, plus nearly plunging the US into martial law.

Would it have still happened if we had the dept. of homeland security then? Of course we'll never know but I think it would have.

Personally, I think that the greatest threat to our way of life posed by the whole 9/11 thing comes from within. With the Patriot act and some of the related legislation, we've set precedents for detaining people for extended periods of time without filing charges, we've extended the scope of exceptions to the search warrant requirement (by using the "exigent circumstances" exception to basically cram in a whole new realm of searches and seizures, and all kinds of other stuff), and so on. Whether you realize it or not, the terrorists may have already gotten what they wanted. Not only did they kill a rather large number of people and throw our economy somewhat out of whack, they've gotten us to pass legislation that seems to have crossed some lines it shouldn't have.

#25, I think it probably happened anyway, just legal now. still I'm not a fan of losing constitutional rights.

#27, I'm sure it was already happening. The problem is that we've set a legal precedent that legitimizes it and increases the likelihood that it will become commonplace. And with good ol' Ashcroft involved in all this, I really feel safe..
