I'm betting NSX, too.
I don't know why people fawn over cars like the Impreza WRX and the Lancer Evolution. While they might be great for blasting up and down dirt roads and going through huge mud puddles, their times on pavement in terms of handing, corner, and acceleration just aren't that impressive. |

#6, wouldn't an AWD car generally do better in autocross? I've seen numerous WRX' at autocrosses I've been to. |

#7, I think NSX's are better balanced cars. AWD has some problems that people refuse to admit to in terms of handling. That gif of a WRX crashing, plus the WRX's nickname of "Wrecks" are indicative of people's over estimation of AWD. Also Subaru's AWD comes in 4 or more flavours. Perfromance to "why shit does it shift power at 20 km/h on dry pavement"

It's rare to come out of 2nd in autox due to the low speeds, so NSXs are not as good at autox (vs a road course) due to the gearing and that 8K redline. They're good, just not great. Still would prefer an NSX over any STi or Evo though. |

AWD is heavy and if not handled in the right way it will understeer you into space. One of the guys around here runs a WRX in amateur rallies and the rear of the car is totally wrecked: he says the understeer is so bad (especially on gravel) he has to get it very sideways to keep up a decent speed and more often than not he hits something with the rear. The rear of the car is quite a sight: deformed quarterpanels, annihilated bumper, no wing (ripped off), broken taillights, even bent tailpipe! |

my experience with AWD is limited to a heavy SUV - but the AWD is great in some respects, but sometimes it's impossible to get the car to slide/kick the rear on dry pavement... and you end up going - well wherever you point the steering - which may not be exactly where you think you are going! I prefer RWD for sudden manuevers... |

#8, Are you sure the problem isn't more related to people's perception of what AWD is/does? People think AWD makes them invincible, but all it does is help them move forward. AWD will get you moving faster in that dirt, but when you're then going too fast into that corner, you're still screwed.
14, That may be true, but it's related more to experience than the AWD systems themselves. AWD drives differently than RWD does, and you have to drive accordingly. No, you can't kick out the back like a RWD... because you're NOT DRIVING RWD! Whoa!
I'm no WRX fanboy or anything, I just wish people would take AWD for what it is. It's a system that lets your car use more wheels to move your car forward. That's it.
Didn't someone post an article about FWD vs RWD vs AWD? He took them around the track, and even though each had its own character and had to be driven differently, they all worked fine. In the end, software (ESP) mattered more than hardware. |

#15, which is why I prefaced my comment with 'heavy SUV' - it's not a handler... I really do like the AWD aspect of it, but prefer RWD (unless I'm in a blizzard, then I'll take the AWD!)... but it certainly handles differently than anything else I've driven and takes some getting used to. |
