Performance: LS1 swap

Certainly willing to accept the possibility that I may be wrong, but....

DIDN'T IT COME WITH AN LS1???

I suppose it could have been a V6 Firebird, but in all honesty, wouldn't it have been cheaper to just buy an LS1 model? V6 models are around five large, but just twice that can net you a nice TA, and I'm sure a total LS1 conversion would cost WAY more than five thousand dollars. Even selling off the old running gear wouldn't net that much.

#5, If it was a pre 98 model it would have had an LT1, but even then a swap would be totally unnecessary. I don't see the rationale behind this at all

I'll be the first to admit that engine swaps on base-model pony cars don't make the most economic sense. I'm assuming that this did, indeed, start out as a 3.8L V6, and although the LS1 is a nice upgrade, I'm not sure that I understand. Maybe if he destroyed the factory engine and needed to swap something in, yes, but short of that, it just doesn't make that much sense. Unless there are a lot of suspension improvements (or something) he's not listing, there's nothing so special about the car that he couldn't have accomplished with a stock TA.

Heck, I wouldn't have repowered my own car if necessity didn't dictate. In my current situation, yes, I'd repower it again, but the cost of duplicating the suspension/chassis setup pretty much seals the deal there.

it started as a v6 bird.. and an LS1 swap makes sense.. it's not that much money.. only like 3-4 grand

#8, Where the hell are there crate LS1s for that much??

Im not doubting you, I really wanna know. If this summer goes well and I get a job in the fall, Ill be looking at an 80s domestic v8 project in the spring..and a 4k LS1 REALLY tickles my fancy.

It would be a cool project but after all is said and done you'd save a great deal of aggrivation just buying a Trans Am

Here's why I said it doesn't make much sense. I know it's often hard to get cars at close to "market value" if they are actually in demand, but...

Edmunds' private party sale value for a 1998 Trans Am is $6,987. For a base Firebird? $4,912. That's roughly $2K difference. If there are any other differences between a Trans Am and a base Firebird other than the engine, logic totally disappears.

Between a loaded V6 and a loaded Trans Am, in my ZIP, it's $6,738 vs. $9,248.

Might it make sense for the HP benefit, if you've already got a car that you've done some work to? Yes. Does it make any sense from a resale point of view? Hell, no, because modification generally reduces the resale value of a car unless you find some other similarly-minded nutcase to sell it to.

#8, Only 3 or 4K? That's stupid reasoning.
That's like buying a home with an outhouse and saying, "let's get new carpet!" instead of an indoor toilet with that cash.

Why waste money on something that didn't need it when there's a more appropriate item to spend it on such as the suspension (which sucked from the factory).
