Yeah, I read this comparo online a week or so ago... it's funny that the Crown Vic is actually the most expensive, but it's the one the police testers still prefer... the Impala is hampered by its FWD, and the Charger is hampered by its smaller trunk and interior.

The Charger is definitely a worthy police car, it has nearly identical safety ratings as the Crown Vic and we all know it makes more power with a fairly smaller engine, but it's still a lard ass and even in R/T it could eat the dust of a Mustang GT or a new GTO. The Impala is of slightly higher quality, at least according to JD Power; It's 300+ lbs. lighter and gets slightly better mileage and it's pretty much just as safe and best of all it's cheaper than the Dodge by about $1000. But it's still got (dun dun dunnnn) FWD. The Crown Vic is still the quintesential Police Car for it's reputation for safety and the fact that it's a nice big RWD V8 with scores of aftermarket police parts. The problem is that it's heavy, underpowered, clumsy machine built on an outdated platform. I think in terms of a car, the Charger wins by a hair despite it's flaws. It's just as spacious as the Vic and has a better chassis. In terms of a police car the Vic has reputation on it's side, but time will tell.

#2, Actually a new Hemi Charger would have no trouble whatsoever keeping up with a Mustang GT. It could probably give the GTO a decent run, too.

There are a few towns in my area that have Charger Cop Cars. Mostly Hemis, but there are a few V6s too.

#3, Well, even though the R/T weighs about 800-1000 lbs more than GM and Ford's sporty offerings it's overall performance isn't very badly hindered. The thing is that it's still a family sedan at heart, and if it came to hard twists and turns the Charger might come up a tad short compared to said GM and Ford offerings. Espescially since some police will be using a downgraded SXT version, but that still retains a balanced power/weight ratio.

I think we can all agree the Charger looks bad ass as a cop car.

#5, It doesn't weight that much more. I found the curb weights at:

Charger: 4100
Mustang GT: 3500
Pontiac GTO: 3700

Stats are for 2007 model cars. Granted, the weight of the police equipment would probably make a bit of a difference.

#6, Definitely, I saw an unmarked Charger cruiser near college the other day, it had blacked out wheels and a pushbar and looked extremely badass, I almost wanted to speed up so he'd pull me over maybe I'd even ask him how it handled and throw him for a loop. :)

#7 Yeah, I realized that after I posted, I must have been looking at the gross vehicle weight, I apologize for the confusion.

But anyways, I'd love to have a built up R/T or even an SRT-8 Charger I personally love their styling, but not as much as I'd love to smoke some Mustang fanboys in a Dodge.

I would have to choose the Charger over the rest, with the Crown Vic in close second

#15, Nope 06' was, GM halted production last September IIRC. The last VZ GTO came off the production line sometime last summer.
