#60, Yeah - that's how it works...in a perfect world.
But those number - even as they dwindle month from month - refelect a trend that's been occuring since the late 70's; the demise of the land barge.
What's more - as the numbers fall - less income is earned on each unit sold month by month. With that - less money to spend on tweets and mid-cycle enhancements (as you have pointed out).
But what really drains the pockets is reengineering a new full size land barge from scratch. That costs millions - millions that are less likely to bring a return on an automakers investment over the long term. GM's H and K bodies are both 21 and 27 years old respectively. That means GM has squeezed out lots of cars for the past 2 decades without spending more than what they have to on a segment with a steadly shrinking demand.
The 2007 DTS rides on a platform that was introduced 27 years ago. That's deplorable! Does that say Cadillac to you? Does that say Cadillac to new car buyers?! Fuck no! |

#60, cont) What that says to the car buyer is that GM is too cheap to even bother re-engineering the car; they'd rather just keep tweeking an old car to compete with newer cars without spending the extra cash.
The reality is that with an already shriking demand for the cars - GM can't spend money it gets from the already deminishing sales on re-engineering a car that isn't even selling well enough to justify re-engineering it.
Tis a vicious cycle.
Same thing for Ford and Panther plaform of 29 years.
I'd also like to point out that BMW's E80 platform (which is also a low volume land barge) was in production for only 6 years before it was discarded and replaced with the E65/66.
The saving grace for both Ford and GM's land barges is fleet sales. Buy 3 of them at close to the true price of the car and both companies can keep the plants running and the UAW happy.
Think of the CV, and the DTS and the next checker cab. Ubiquitous, unchanged for years, and was once at the top of their game.
