#40, Compared to the '96, on the plus side:

- It looks better, IMO. I like the swoopiness of it, and I especially like the view from the front windshield. The hood that curves up over the front wheels reminds me of a shrunken-down C3 'Vette.
- Interior fit and finish is fantastic, far ahead of the relative cheapness of the '96.
- The engine is powerful and sounds great.
- More storage space, with a much bigger trunk.
- More interior room overall, at the apparent expense of some head room.
- Drives nicer on the highway, without the wandering twitchiness that defines the older car.

#41, On the down side:
- Steering and overall operation is more vague.
- It feels slower somehow.
- The car constantly beeps and bongs at me.
- The ergonomics, especially the radio, are an absolute nightmare. To add insult to injury, for some reason it only picks up two local FM stations, and reception is spotty.
- The gauge cluster is an annoyance. The tachometer is HUGE, but the speedometer is tiny and shoved into the corner of the binnacle. There's almost no space between the "40" and the "60" mark, which makes setting my speed difficult.
- Visibility is worse from all angles.

#41, Recent Mazda interiors are stellar. My CX-3's is farrr nicer than some supposedly "upmarket" vehicles I've sat in.

The lack of headroom may be due to the retractable fastback.

#42, but real drivers' care about the tach :P

But seriously, those seem to be common "minuses". Glad you like the car so far, even as a rental. My dad's Mazda 3 had trouble picking up radio stations when we went out of state, and I can't figure out why.

#44, I will admit, that is certainly a drawback in my CX-3... there are maybe 5 good stations I can pick up, and only in certain areas. Middle of Cocoa Beach? Can't pick-up shit.

Before I ever drove a vehicle with paddle shifters, my gut told me they'd be a poor substitute for a real stick and clutch set-up; a glorified automatic with none of the real pleasure of a manual.

Yesterday, I drove home and decided to test the MX5 on sport mode with the paddles. It turns out my gut was pretty much correct. I am unmoved.

I have decided, though, that I'd really like to have one of these with a manual. Too bad the price is so absurd.

#46, Is the retractable fastback important to you? You could, conceivably, look for a Fiat 128 Spider. Same car, same interior, same Mazda manual transmission, built in the same factory, except it has a turbo Fiat engine rather than an NA Skyactiv engine.

#47, 124. And Also, that Tigershark 1.4 is the same unit used in the Darts and Renegades if I remember right.

#47, Not so much the retractable part, but I feel a hardtop would be easier to maintain long-term than a soft top. The one on my older Miata has been kind of a pain in the ass.

The closest Mazda dealer is much closer than the closest Fiat dealer, so it makes the Miata more attractive from a service-related perspective.

Honestly, I don't think that would bother me too much. I like older cars, anyway, so smoothness and refinement aren't terribly important to me.

#42, Also, I found out why the FM reception was so bad: The antenna was never installed! It was still wrapped up in clear plastic in the trunk. I went ahead and screwed it in, and it's fine now.

We had perfect weather today, so I put the top down on the way home from the grocery store (where I actually managed to get $100 in groceries into the trunk). I'm actually really liking the MX-5; I'm seriously considering the cheaper soft-top variant as a contender.

#54, Ah, well, that would do it for radio reception :P

My CX-3 has a sharkfin antenna on the roof, probably why my reception is so poor. The Mazda2 had a ridiculously long roof antenna that I replaced with an aftermarket stubby antenna; didn't affect reception.

#54, Instructions unclear: stuck radio antennae in box.

#37, Random: I just happened to notice on the keyring from Enterprise that this car is identified as a "2021 MAZDA MIRF GT."

I will now forever think of it as a "Mazda Mirf."

#57, Get yourself a blue one and put a flame decal on the doors and have the Mirfmobile.

It's totalled. The insurance is only paying off about 2/3 what I still owe on it, and I don't have GAP coverage.

Fuck.
