Description:
Traded the Genesis for this two days ago, but it's been a busy couple of days, so this has been the soonest I could get pictures.

Surprisingly different from the Genesis.
It's about as powerful, but a little more highly strung (it doesn't really move until it gets above 4000 rpm). The engine is a lot smoother though, especially under idle (the Genesis vibrated a lot at idle). It sounds better, though it's a lot more muted. The shifter is a lot less precise, with longer throws, although the clutch is a lot less grabby.
The steering is sharper, with a little more feel, though the cornering doesn't inspire the same confidence....this car wants to understeer, understandably since it's FWD (incidentally, it's the first FWD car I've actually owned). I'm relieved that it has no noticeable torque steer.
Interior fit and finish is great, seats are very comfortable, though the intrusive techiness of it irks me - I frigging hate the push-button starter, and the touch-screen radio is a huge distraction, too. |

#4, It has steering wheel mounted audio controls, but only if I feel like scrolling through each of my radio presets. The preset buttons technically are present, but only in touchscreen form, meaning I have to take my eyes off the road. Annoying.
It has more storage than the Genesis. Everywhere you turn in this car there's another little pocket, cubby, or compartment, which is nice. The trunk is huge, which is also nice. The brakes are terrific. The LED headlights are like portable suns attached to the front of the car.
All in all, I'm pleased so far.

Awesome. Were you dead-set on an Elantra or did you look at others first? I've heard the Forte is similar, but have no firsthand proof of such. I've also heard these are miles better than the Focus. Again, I don't know if that's true or not. Haven't tried an Elantra out yet. (a new one, anyway).
How are the side bolsters? In pictures, it seems they're pretty aggressive. |

#6, It was a complete last-minute decision. I was getting my last oil change done on my service plan, and was walking around the lot looking at the vehicles. This one caught my eye (there was also a really nice metallic blue 2017 Veloster, but it was an automatic).
When they finished they showed me that an oil pipe to my turbo had sprung a leak, a $245 repair. The new pipe was only about $45, but it would still mean finding the time to replace it myself. The car was also about to need tires, and the clutch's release point was getting higher and higher....and I shudder to think what a new clutch would run. All normal things for a daily driven car with 160,000 miles on it. So at the very last minute, I asked to test drive this one.
I had test driven a new 2019 Veloster this summer, and was only put off by it's automatic and lack of power. This car feels virtually the same as the 2019 Veloster, with the exact same forward interior, a 201 hp engine and a six speed. Sold. |

#7, They also had a 2019 Veloster Turbo R on the lot, with a manual, but it was $6,000 more than this secondhand (11,400 mile) Elantra for a car that basically just amounts to a shorter wheelbase hatch version of the Elantra.
The bolsters are a lot less intrusive than the ones on the Genesis. I'd actually call these pretty ideal....big enough to grip the sides on cornering, but not so big that it makes entering/exiting the vehicle a problem.

#8, I don't know how widely available they are in your area, but it seems that here you can get decent prices on both cars. I did find a Elantra 6 spd out the door for #14k. It's a base model, though.
Did you drive the Veloster at all or nah?
Oops.
Congrats :)

#9, Not the new Turbo one, no. It was pretty well out of my price range. Even buying this one was a bit of a stretch for me, though ultimately it looks like it's going to work out. |

#11, My mother used to have a 2010 Elantra. The interior in this one is a huge improvement over it. The interior is mostly nicer than the 2011 Genesis was, for that matter, though I notice a larger amount of hard plastic, such as on the dash and door panels. Then again, the Genesis did sell at a higher price point when new. |

Thanks to our near-catastrophic weather, the car now has minor hail damage. It's not immediately noticeable without very close inspection, so probably not enough to bother putting it in the body shop. But it's still going to annoy me. |

#15, Yeah, I have full coverage. I just don't want to go to the trouble of putting the car in the body shop for something I can only see if I stand at a specific angle and let the light hit it just right. I mean, I've still got a deductible. |

#17, wouldn't waste my time protecting a Dart. :/ I don't know why I developed such a disdain for FCA products recently, but that's what stopped me from getting a Renegade. :/ |
