PHP is a "language" for writing dynamic webpages. MySQL is a common database used for web stuff. PHP can interface with MySQL to store and serve dynamic content. RiceOrNot and the Forums both use both of them.

#359, Yeah. The simple, crude gallery I use for my highres images is written only in PHP--it runs a simple script that makes a list of files available in a directory, and then tries to pull thumbnail images with the same names out of another directory. The rest of the site is also written in PHP, but the stuff I write gets stored in a DB.
