Description:
This is the '84 Super Duty Fiero that paced Indy. First mid-engine car to do so, it had a trick version of Pontiac's 2.5L "Iron Duke". While the Duke was a 151, the Super Duty was a 163, I believe, at 2.7L And had an hp rating of 232, comapered to the production engine's 92. Versions of the engine had up to 370hp, with some rumored to push 500. I believe the 370hp version was all motor as well. |

#18 I'm not sure. If so, though, your still not talking a large enough difference to adversly affect handling. the 2.8 was probably up there with the 3.8 (or close) and they handled great, from what I hear.

#29, Corporate engines debuted in 83' I think, and engine "families" inside GM were on the way out well before that.
Heck, even that 78' Grand Prix I just got didn't have a Pontiac motor in it stock, the 301 was an option. Unless you lived in California, then you had to get a 305 Chevy motor optioned in if you wanted a V8. If you bought the base model, you got a buick-built 6 cyl in the 200-something CID range....
And I'm not sure how durable the Duke was, most of those first-gen GM 4 cylinders were all crap, especially the later ones with iron blocks and aluminum heads, they used more HP to eat their own head gaskets than they put to the road. |
