it went from "new suvs can't perform offroad" to "they are too expensive" |

*cough* I'll jump late in the game here (as usual)
I own an SUV - why?
well, I live in Michigan. Michigan has snow, mud, and everything else. Ok - I can get along in the city with a 4X2 pickup - drove 5 years in a little Nissan truck here in GR
My parents on the other hand, live about 90 minutes up north from Grand Rapids. They live on a dirt road that is not plowed. It takes some 2 miles to get to their house. Steep hills, one track, washouts, etc. They used to ski in before they got their SUV.
I have a family - an 18mo son. I am not going to ski in carrying him. So therefore I drive my wife's Mountaineer when we visit them in the winter. It acts as a family station wagon, it is fairly fast with the 5.0L v8 and AWD, and doesn't get stuck in most situations. Would I take this thing to do some serious offroading? No - I would buy a jeep jeep. But does it do what I need it to do? - yes!
So there are cases where SUVs are needed. Not all, but some. |

AWD is a little less tricky for the wife eh?
don't know too much about off roading... seems like the original jeeps are rugged for offroading... though I would probably prefer a lifted truck? |

#166, AWD generaly doesn't do as well as part time four wheel drive due to the lack of a low range |

#167 - yep, no 'stump puller' gear for getting out of tight spots... but this is mostly for snow and dirt traction abilities so it will do. I had a friend with a Jimmy and his wife drove it all around town in the 4X4 LO mode... he was fairly pissed. |
