The GTO was actualy built "Illegaly" by Pontaic division. GM had strictly told them that they could not put an engine larger than 300 cid in a midsized car, so they jumped through a loophole by offering the original GTO and it's well-over 300 cid engine as an option package on the LeMans. SInce it was a pre-exsisting car, it went right under the GM radar, by the time they figured out what had happened, the car was too much of a sales success to do anything about it

Does anybody know how to tell a '66 and a '67 apart?

#10, The grille and tail lights are supposedly different, but after looking at a few side-by-side pictures of 66' and 67' GTO's, I can't see how.....

There were some great corporate drag cars in the early 60s - then GM HQ shut it all down - limiting engine types into certain models, etc. Thank you Pontiac for taking a chance and starting the muscle car era. I'm sure it would have happened anyways...Pontiac or not

#14, Pontiac was on the verge of failure in the late 50's, the styling had become stagnant and sales were poor. John DeLorean and Bunkie Knudsen saw probably better than anyone else that the only way to save Pontiac was to design somthing for the youth market, since 20 somthing Baby Boomers didn't want to buy thier dad's car. To foster a youthfull image, Pontaic got involved in both proffessional drag racing and NASCAR, but by the early 60's, GM had shut those ventures down as they didn't want thier company getting a "Boy Racer" image

The GTO would also be one of the few times Delorean and co. would butt heads with GM managment and win. Many of the other projects he and his staff would devlop over the years would never see the light of day thanks to execs who wanted Pontiac to be successful, but not so much so that it would supplant Chevrolet and the Corvette as it's flagship prodcuts. Among the casualties were the original concept for the Firebird (not the Camaro sister car it became) and the Banshee

#10, This must be a 67', the plate says "GTO400" and the 400 wasn't an option for 66'
