A true beater. Backing up across the lawn and crashing into the Mazda wouln't be anything special. Just shift into D.

#2, Give the Mazda to me instead of hitting it with the Olds. :( I've wanted a 2003 Protege5 for a long time.

#5, When I bought my Sentra, believe me, I tried to find a reasonably-low-mileage Protege5... I SERIOUSLY wanted one... still do. But by now they're just too old, and most are manual-transmission ones that were totally ragged-out.

#6, I had the same problem when looking for one. I particularly wanted one in silver or blue, and they're all stick-shifts owned by hip young urban apartment-dwellers who suck at driving, parked on the street and get the crap beat out of them. The dark blue Shiftronic automatic I test drove was rusting from life on the coast and from parking under trees. The silver one my dad test drove a few years ago was a stick and had suffered a hamfisted stereo install that left the dash all chewed up. The same dealer had a red one with a blown engine caused by the owner's wife running it out of oil. They were going to replace the engine and call it a "Mazda Certified Pre-Owned" vehicle - just like the ragged-out silver one. The only thing you could certify was that it had definitely been "pre-owned".

#7, The car search came down to a Protege5, Mazda 3, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix or a Focus. Protege was too old and hard to find. Mazda was too expensive. Vibe was gutless and I wouldn't go near a Toyota. So we settled on a Focus, and almost bought a ZX5 in the same blue as Driven_out's old car, with leather and alloys. It was a nice car with 22k miles, but it had a battery leak that left acid all over the engine bay, and a rear hatch that wouldn't cooperate no matter what you did. It also turned out to be the dealer's old courtesy shuttle. We looked at probably a dozen more Foci before we settled on my silver '07 SES sedan.

...if I had been willing to blow my budget by $2000, I would have gotten an '07 Sentra with keyless entry/ignition, sunroof, leather, and it was black... sometimes I think I should have gone for it... even though the "new" generation '07 was a bit chunky in appearance, with horrid stock Altezzes.

...I also hoped that I'd be lucky enough for a Saab 9-2x to be in my area, but, no... the resale on those things is unbelievably low, but it's essentially a prettier, more luxurious WRX wagon... what's not to like?
