Description:
There are a lot of different definitions for 'rice' out there. Is a Japanese car with plus-
sized wheels automatically rice? Can clear front lenses be tasteful and non-rice? With
this picture I intend to find out. :) Yes, this is my car. I won't be offended if somebody
thinks it's rice. I know it's not fast in a straight line, and I use it accordingly (to auto-x,
not street race).

I still say MR2 was a cheap rip-off of the Fiero... but this one is nice. And not rice.

I liked the little MR2 hardtops. The new "Spyder" does nothing for me.

I'm impressed with your MK1. Most of the time you see them all beat to hell or just not taken care of properly but yours is pretty damn nice. I have a 91' and I love it. MR2's are so much fun.

I'm not digging the styling, but there's no stickers, the wing is stock, and it actually gets used for something besides burnouts in the high school parking lot. I give it a 1.

#27, how do you think it got into production? they couldnt market it to GM as a true sports car (omg corvette competion). much less the fact that it had an anemic iron duke. "Because of a "cool" reception by GM management and accountants, it was finally marketed to GM as a fuel-efficient commuter car." -wiki.

#27, '84 Ironduke SE's. Some 90 hp and a 3 speed.

But thankfully - that changed in 1988.

#21, How was it a "cheap" ripoff of the Fiero? Cheap like having a modern, 16V motor? FIVE whole forward speeds? Disc brakes all around? A chassis actually worth driving? Toyota had been in development of this car since the mid '70s. Uniformed opinion forming makes you look stupid.

Anyway, I don't know how I went 4 years without ever seeing this before. Clean, pretty little '87 NA.

#31, Am I wrong or did MR2 start out as a Lotus design? I could have mistaken it with another vehicle though.

#33, it had lotus engineering in the suspension, as far as the car design i dont think so.

#33, Yes, it was the original Elise, but when Lotus couldn't afford to develop it further they sold the engineering to Toyota, who had already been thinking of developing the first Japanese mid-engined sports car as a matter of national pride.

Interesting side note, the 4AGE is basically a carbon-copy of the Cosworth/Lotus BDA twincam.

See? Let the guys form Lotus work on the concept and basic design of the car and let some other respectable company work out the details... and you've got one of the greatest cars in the world. Fun, not too expensive and one that can be used daily without braking down, catching fire, burning fuses or getting stuck on the first speed bump.

#37, Yeah. Better styling but heavier, less "Lotus-like" handling and shock! Power steering. Still great sports cars, just different.

#38, The MK1.5s (with a SW20 turbo swap, the engine code currently escapes me) have a nasty habit of burning. Fast as heck though!
