I heard these failed in japan because they weren't up to Toyota's high-quality standards. |

#1, People look at Japanese cars as being more quality items because one simple reason: America doesn't "do" perceived quality... interior plastics, damped switches, shutlines etc. American car companies put money into what's underneath, or at least they used too (hello GM! Ford?) Sad and superficial as it may seem, most people only look skin deep for quality, in cars as well as people. I owned a 2000 VW Jetta once and while on the surface it seemed to be of amazing quality (interior, innovative luxury features, shutlines etc.) it was actually a unreliable piece of shit, bnot to mention incredibly old fashuoned or "low-tech" as those of the rice persuasion may have called it, beam axle, 8 valve sohc engine, 4 speed auto anyone? If the Japanese ever learn a lesson from VW on style and still maintain their reliability they will put everybody out of business.

I still think that Jetta was a design classic, the only car I could ever picture Deiter Rams driving. VW has definitely lost the plot with the new bucnh of fussy looking garbage. |

#6, hey, asshole, its a joke. the cav was the top selling car in the late 80's and early 90's (for chevy, my fault for the lack of clarifaction). and ive seen thousands upon thousands of this gen. gee, i wonder if they sold any! are you always looking for a victim to prey upon?

These actually had some nicer amenities than the domestic Cavaliers, like leather wrapped shift knob and power folding rear view mirrors and were well accepted enough to be sold in Japan for 5 years |

#3, I drive a 2000 Jetta and don't have an complaints about it. Mines also a TDI with 250,000 KM on it, I've only had one problem and it wasn't bad. Fixed it myself for 50 bucks. |

#6, First Post I will respond to:
DiRF is right, the Cavalier was quite successful. It the land of Canadia, it was refered to as "BREAD AND BUTTER Car. Mean, amny Chev dealers DEPENDED on Cavalier sales. And guess what, despite the Ottawa weather and the cities' efforts (Ottawa was almalgamated 2001), they are still here. |

#15, When I was in Alberta and British Columbia last year, even the 1st gens (82-87) were quite common. I saw a lot more than I see around here. Must not use salt there. |
