I don't have a cell phone, and hopefully never will. I just hope I don't end up in some shit job where I'm basically forced to own one. |

#21, Whats so bad about them? Other than the rest of the American population owning one, too, of course. |

I think it's safe to assume the image Skid refers to is that of the vapid dumbass with a cellphone perpetually at his ear, blathering on at the top of his voice about nonsense no one in a three mile radius could possibly care about. |

#25, yep, and that fact that he's from a part of the country that isn't known to be weathly. I've people (not neccesarily Skid) associate cell phones with wealth. |

#24, "The cult of the cell phone." It's just a hip, trendy image, what with the rappers and scenesters flouncing the things everywhere they go, trying to look important....like they're so important that they can't just wait until they get home or use a pay phone instead.
There's also a certain snobbery involved, since everyone is alway competing to see who has the phone with the most "bling" factor, who has the one with the most useless gizmos, and who has the ones that make the most annoying possible "chirp" noises every time they talk into them. It's the whole technosnob thing....the constant struggle to have "the best" just so one can say one has "the best." Kind of like all those people who bought the Playstation 3. |

#26, I don't have one either. Used to have one when I worked 50 miles away, and kinda needed it. Never used it, tho. Matter of fact, my mom's the only one in the family with one.

#29, Yeah, I know, I'm just saying. My grandma doesn't want a cell ohone, because she doesn't want to look rich, or so she says, then in the same month, she goes out and gets a '07 Tahoe LTZ. |

I've never really owned a cell phone myself, that is to say I never really signed a contract or anything, I usually just borrowed one of my parent's when a situation came up I thought would require one. I also never really associated cell phones with wealth, except for in the late eighties when the damn things cost $3,000.

Not so much a wealthy appliance, cell phones have nevertheless become status symbols. Some people practically live through their phones, and they've become an extension of themselves. Sort of like cars, except that one I can actually understand.
We live in sort of a cell phone culture now, and to me the cell perfectly represents everything that's wrong with modern culture. |

Why place the blame on the phone when its society's fault in the first place? |

#35, I'm not trying to place blame, if there's even blame to place. You might be misinterpreting my comments.
It's simple: I have no use for cell phones, I don't like anything about cell phones, I don't like the cell phone culture, so I just don't want one. Ever. |
