#4, For a time - yes. It was "the thing" to have all over your car's doors and body pannels. It was a symbol of class and prestige - wealth and fame - style and status. If american cars from the 1950's had fins - they were outdone by the sheer awesomeness that is plastic with a decerative wooden apperance.

If anything - it was just some appearance package for cars back then that somehow was considered cool. I think Chrysler was the biggest offender because of all the wood panneled cars I can remember - almost all of them were Chrlyser products.

#6, also, the GM big wagons (mainly the Caprice) played a part in it too. As did the big Fords.
