My two cents: On performance cars, 17" is the best all-around size, I think. Looks good, good low weight, plenty of brake room. 18" is fine too if you've got some major performance, because you need 18" rims to fit 14" brakes with good calipers. This isn't talking about drag racing cars, obviously, where brakes aren't a concern, but on the kind of cars I really like, 17" is usually plenty. Depends on the car, though. A miata looks just 'bout perfect with 16s, and you can get enough brake for that little car under them.
