Have none of you noticed the holes in the hood? It's a turbo'd 2.3 litre four from the early 80's... actually, this engine was found in the Mustang for a few years too. But it was turbo'd factory with nice results. Nothing wrong with this car. |

Turbo Coupe? I thought those were a little later with a more pointed nose instead of that grille. I could be wrong though. But that looks like someone simply put a TC hood on an earlier non-turbo T-bird. Or they may have put the other Turbo Coupe parts on it too. |

The turbo coupe was introduced in 1983, and produced until 1988, when they changed the body style for 1989, they did away with the turbo coupes, and introduced the supercoupes. They did away with the supercoupes after the 1995 model year because of low sales, and the bird in 97 altogether. Now they have this thing they call a t-bird. It just aint right. |

I think I have a real car, Captain Thunderegg, something that's a bit more performance orientated than a Thunderbird even! Thunderbirds have always been the fat man's mustang due to their large overhangs, huge weight, and generally oversized stylings. Back when the Thunderbird was FIRST initially concieved, it was to compete with the MGA's and other British sports cars of the time.
Needless to say, it never did that well, and Ford kept fucking with the styling, making it bigger and bigger, then adding two more seats, and thus ending any real "sports car" type expectancy. |

I was looking at a red '83 Thunderbird recently to buy...wasn't a turbo, though, it was a 3.8 V6. That thing sure drove well. |

MulletPatrol, do you know anything about cars?? The thunderbird was not conceived to compete with MGA's or other British sports car, while it may have captured some of its original styling from them (not my idea) the car was made to compete against the corvette of the time. I will agree with you though, Ford did mess up when they added 2 seats to the car, and even when they decided to make it a boat in the 70's. The 83 thunderbird is small in comparison to those made in the 70's, I have never considered the t-bird a "fat man's mustang" as you do, it was never meant to compete with the mustangs. It was competition (again) for Gm's offerings of the monte carlo's and Lumina's of the time. Why would ford want to make it compete with another one of their cars? The sadest thing is, the thundrbord sold its best in the mid 70's when they were HUGE. |

Geist and Jole are right. Dearborn was taking a pasting in the high-end sports car market from the Corvette, which GM introduced in '53. The Thunderbird was their attempt to stop the bleeding. It was originally conceived as a fast, stylish and somewhat luxurious car. A "gentleman's sports car" of sorts. And while 'Birds between about 1965 and 1983 were god-awful, the Turbo Coupes and SuperCoupes of the '80s and '90s were really a return to the Thunderbird's roots. |

My dad has the last T-Bird, the Limited Edition '98. I actually don't like it that much, but I can't drive it anyway. I am not under it's insurance till I'm 21. (I'm 18 now) |

They had to make it a boat in the late 60's, the Mustang had claimed the sporty two-seat spot on the production line, some T-bird enthusiasts don't count any of the post 65's as "REAL THUNDERBIRDS" as they were built to compete against Full Size GM models, like the Mote Carlo. |

Pluto316, just a correction to your post. Your dads t-bird is a 1997 model or older. ford stopped producing the t-bird in 1997. |
