The question: Will this fake-retro shit cause it to join the ranks of the New Beetle, the Mini, the PT Cruiser? I honestly hope it does not, since this car still gets away with SOME manliness, and, after all, a GT or Cobra version will still move pretty fast. If it does go the way of the last several "retro" throwbacks however, then I think the Mustang is finished. It must not be allowed to become a girl/suburban mom/sixteen-year-old-rich-white-boy-with-backwards-hat-mobile.

#20, well 'retro' sells these days - at least temporarily - like the new Beetle / PT Cruiser were pretty hot sellers when they first came out... and now they are losing sales... I just want a car that looks boxy with a straight 'dam' grill like a '65 Fairlane...

#21, Nah, these will still sell, IF Ford continues to offer them at a reasonable price point, and they should stay fairly true to what the Mustang has traditionally been about.

Still, I like the current styling of the Mustang better than what they're about to do to it--they kept some of the traditional design features, like triple-lens taillights, fake scoops cut into the rear fenders, etc., without resorting to full-on retro.

I just hope that the final, production version of this car doesn't come out looking as bland as the T-bird did, and I also hope that it clocks in at a reasonable weight, unlike most of the other DEW-chassis cars Ford has made.

#23, I actually like the t-bird looks - not overstated - but that's just me - I know Ford is dropping the T-bird in awhile... too much cross-platform sharing can really hurt a cars overall image even though it saves the companies $$$...

#23, I'll always love the Mustang, as long as the basic points of the original design don't get corrupted. At least it didn't become the Probe. (Not that I don't like the Probe, but, let's face it, it's just not as cool.) What I'm saying is that I hope it doesn't get all pussified. Nothing is as good as it's original, but I think this is doing a MUCH better job than the Mini, the New Beetle (THERE'S a major design corruption) and the PT Cruiser (I don't even want to talk about it.) Let's hope the Mustang stays this way.

#25, <DITTO>

I'm a diehard Mustang fan too, and if finances allow, I'll have one in the next few years, maybe a new-style one. The difference in the PT Cruiser (and even new Thunderbird) and the Mustang is that (except for a few years in the 80's/early 90's), the Mustang has carried it's traditional styling cues throughout it's history. They're not trying to sell a "throwback" or concept, they're simply selling a Mustang. Ford has no need to expand their market and "yuppify" the car, because they have a strong following already. I don't think this restyling will hurt the Mustang any more than any previous restyling has.

By the way, I happen to like the new Thunderbirds! For some reason, that retro-teal color they use looks great to me on that car.

#24, The T-bird totally lost its image long before they finally got around to making that retro car--since the 1970's, it's been a large, heavy coupe. Trying to go back to that "sportscar" image with a retrofied, blandly styled little vehicle, available only in pastel colors with an automatic transmission and a 3.9L engine with very little low-end punch (supposedly) just doesn't work for me.

I actually liked the MN12 (89-97) and Fox-body 'Birds better than what they tried to do with this latest one.

#26, It's really going to hurt if they weigh nearly 4000 lbs. and the GT model comes with the 3.9, a la the new Thunderbird..

#31, But then people can say "Our competitors have a bigger engine than we do; that's why it's slow! It's not a fair comparison!"

#34, Knowing how GM's been doing business lately, expect it on a stretched J-body chassis. :-P

#35, Bah. At least I still have me third gens.

And to clarify, since I feel like typing more, I'm not a total Chevy fanboy, all anti-mustang and stuff. I'll ride around in one with no problems. I'd just rather be behind the wheel of a Camaro.

#37, I don't know. I have no idea what engines they're going to be offered with. I was pointing out a worst-case scenario that would kill enthusiasm for the Mustang very quickly.

#35, Yeah, you know. Terrible RWD LS1 GTO, CTS, and XLR; really powerful LS6 CTS-V, etc.

#39, All of which should arrive at a price point outside of ponycar territory. The GTO looks pretty nice, but I don't like those Cadillac abominations at all.
