#20, well it's not like new cars just explode on impact...the engine compartment is designed to fold in a collision, and the passenger section is designed to keep its shape...the distribution of the impact energy is not random in a new car, it's all very well thought out |

#21, This car exploded. :-P
My car, (i.e. the current example of an old car with a frame) is very well thought out too. The engine and transmission are both designed to sheer off under the car in a front end collision. The frame is strongest around the passengers. There is no example that I have seen of a Volvo that has been in an accident in which there is any damage inside the passenger area. |

#22, yeah, volvos are an exception...they are pretty damn safe, but i dont believe the same holds for most older cars/trucks with solid frames |

#23, The land yachts that used to dominate the american market are all extremely safe considiring their lack of safety technology. Mainly because of how solid they are. |

i meant something like a head-on crash at 40mph...an accord would fold but the passenger compartment should still be somewhat in shape and the driver would get some injuries...if my '87 el camino ever hit a car head on at 40mph, the front bumper would dent slightly, and my spine would probably break ;p |

"i would much rather be in a newer car in a serious accident"
SURE, plastic body panels and no frame are SO much better than a solid frame and thick steel.
You, kid, have a major deathwish, don't you? |

#28, Crush zones and crash-tested vehicles are so more unsafe than a solid steel frame that does little, if anything, to gradually decelerate the vehicle by deforming. And plastics are so much more dangerous than hard, rigid dashboards, steering wheels with steel accents, and I suppose airbags, shoulder restraints, and anti-lock brakes are overrates, too. Sure, a car with a full frame and chrome bumpers may get damaged less in a wreck, but since it deforms so little on impact, the passengers are guaranteed to get hurled into something hard on the inside of the car. |

#31, Yep, and I'm willing to bet in an accident like this, the occupants of a car with a full frame would be just as dead. |

#32, that's a damn lie, you know as well as I do if it had a full frame it would have plowed over that post with nary a scratch. wait what? |

#30, That's what seat belts are for...and if I bought a car without shoulder harnesses, I'd install them. It's not that hard to do, and I'd rather preserve my life than the "all original" status of the car. |

The dude was going 120mph when he hit this pole, the accord held up pretty well imo. If it was a ford crown vic, it would of busted into flames and everyone would of died. Out of the 6 people, the drive was said to have died. |
