Any religion, twisted and taken to an extreme can kill. I am ashamed of anyone who kills in the name of Christianity. They have no business associating themselves as a Christian when they've gone against everything Christianity is supposed to stand for.

So please, don't use an evil tragedy like Jonestown as a chance to have a knee-jerk reaction and bash religion.

Gotta be one of the better defenses against such a remark I have seen in some time.

#4, How about Waco, or the Heaven's Gate Colony then?
Cult or not, killing has always been a part of religion - it was fought for to the death in the crusades, and we now continue to see it to this day with the middle east. Now it's a christianity vs islam platform.

I don't "bash" religion, but I am highly critical of it as it seems to cause more problems and distort views than in people or situations which haven't been greatly influenced by it.

I also find it a shame that certain people have used religion simply to scam others out of money. Likewise it's a shame that people are weak-minded enough to allow themselves to be bought into these "religions."

#8, gotta disagree there. i would love to go that route and open up my own church.
for a "suggested" fee donation into the collection plate, you get some nice kick ass seating at my church. we have no alterboys. we have altergirls (strippers and hooters waitress are encouraged to apply)

we will pray (while watching on the 30 wall to wall plasma screens) that god will guide our local team to victory, and instead of wine and eucharist, pass around beer and wings.

alter girls will collect tips and act as bookies as well in my tax shelter church. :P

*and if this offends anyone, realize this obviouly just my satirical fantasy.

My thoughts are, religion is the enemy of progress, science, ration, reason, self-reliance and peace. I'll leave it at that.

#10, I said it was a shame but I didn't say I didn't think it was a huge cash cow, entry level Scientologists (OT 1's or whatever) pay $12,000 each for their starter kits! That's a jet-ski right there!

#13, I don't subscribe to any religions myself but I always figured if Christianity or Buddhism or whatever make their members happy then that's fine by me. As long as it's not a sadistic cult of course
