Description:
Sexy Sansui 9090DB, the super rare Euro-market all black model is even hotter. I might score a mint one later today! |

#1, I've mentioned to you before that I am always on the hunt for this stuff... however, I have poor luck. And btw, I hate bunnies and cats. |

#4, yeah you have, but I didn't think you were on the hunt for vintage stuff as much as tube gear and the like. Craigslist is GOLD for finding this stuff, give it a try. |

#9, wow, love the Altecs. I'd love to get into building tube stuff but I don't trust my skill. |

#10, I started with modifying tube equipment - I would recommend scoring a Dynaco 70 and rebuilding it - several kits are available to replace the power supply and signal board. If you wanted to stay solid-state, there are also kits available for that. Chip amps, Class-D amps, DACs, speakers, etc.
After reading Sound Practices magazine in the early 90s, I decided it would actually be pretty easy to do this stuff, especially since tube gear is way less complicated than solid-state. Much easier to do point to point wiring versus PCB work. Anyways - my first preamps/amps were primitively made, using aluminum bud boxes and drills... I would only build schematics that someone else made.
After much reading, etc - I got a better feel on how to do power supplies and designs. There is software out there (Tubecad, PSUD, etc) which simplifies things even more. Once you understand basic EE stuff about grounding, etc - it isn't that bad.
highly recommend the http://www.diyaudio.com/ site |

#11, I'm always on the lookout for vintage gear - both solid-state and tube. I had a really nice Onkyo integrated I really liked. Plus a nice H-K receiver that was actually transformer coupled. But if you ever see Dynaco, Fisher, Marantz, Mac, Scott, etc tube gear - that's always money in the bank! |

#12, Thank you, I appreciate the encouragement. I'm checking out diyaudio right now. I'll stop by the newstand on my way home and pick up Sound Practices. The ST-70s are a bit steep right now, could I just buy a chassis and do the rest myself? |

#13, Oh yeah those coupled HKs are cool. I've got a mint circa '68 330a with the "Noctourne" face, it goes black when you turn it off and looks like a prop from 2001. Those Onkyos are rated very highly.
on a side note, just got some custom made stands for my Polk 10bs in the mail, can't wait to go home and set them up... I'll probably spend a few hours finding that sweet imaging g-spot. |
