Didn't Alex Zanardi get his legs chopped off or something? Or was that just a rumor?

Not really chopped off...just crushed into nothing. I think they amputated him just below the knees or something like that.

actually if you want to get technical, nascar didn't ban the wing cars, they just restricted them to 305ci motors. so no one drove one after that.

Richard Petty was the man. And I don't even like NASCAR.

Do NASCAR cars have carbueretors for any performance reason, or is it just the officials' yestertech obsession?

#45, Tradition, but considering they'd do over 200 w/o those damn restrictor plates, I wouldn't call it yestertech, they're probably the most bomb-proof carbs you'll ever see

#46, True. I suppose if they turned the engineers loose they'd be almost as fast as Indy cars by now. I mean, they were hitting 200 in 1970.

Is tradition why they still have the four-speed gearboxes, too?

#49, A Superbird hit 200 at Talledega in 1970. I don't remember who the driver was.

#48, Just about every single NASCAR rule on the cars comes from the "you can't race it unless you sold it stock" years, with exceptions for safety, so I'd say yes......

#51, I know that David Pearson once said that he could take any Superbird from any dealer's lot and run 180 with it right outta the showroom..... some stock car huh? :-)

The real problem the governing bodies are having is that teams are sneaking computer controls into cars that aren't allowed, like traction control units, and w/ current technology, even the best tech inspector can't find all the hiding places for a 1 inch square computer chip

#56, Were they geared for 180? Seems a lot wider than your typical 1970-era four-speed.
(The street cars, I mean, not the race cars.)

#40, Speed channel recently showed a replay of that race...Jesus CHRIST that was a horrid race...

On the first day of qualifying, Barricelo(sp?) left the track, and flew into the wall at ~180mph...went unconcious.
On the second day of qualifying, a rookie driver slammed into the wall and died.
On raceday, Senna crashed into the wall, a piece of his car's suspension that had broken off pierced through his visor and killed him.
Later in the race, there was an accident on pit road that sent tires and other such debris into various pit crews, injuring several mechanics.

Ayrton Senna was known for keeping a Brazilian flag in his car, to wave it if he won the race, but when they looked in his car, after he had died, they found not the Brazilian flag, but the flag of the country from which that rookie was from (the rookie that died in qualifying). Ayrton was leading the race when he crashed, and most likely would have won...so he could wave that flag. :..(
