Shelby had originaly approached GM when looking for an engine supplier, but at the time (1957) GM had already sunken a lot of money into the Corvette, and they were not ready to expand to a second 2-seater car line, so they turned him down, and he moved on to Ford.

Shelby's success caused a failure of sorts, Ferrarri at the time was willing to let itself be acquired by Ford for $18 Million on the condition that Ford would withdraw from LeMans (the were running both the Cobra and the GT40 at the time) Ford said no, so Ferarri walked away from the deal

Good, because if it was just $18, I'd withdraw from Lemans to buy Ferrari. Of course, I don't race at Lemans, so that's a sacrifice I'd be willing to make :-)

Oh...whew! I didn't think Ford was THAT stupid, but that's still a deal!

Had Ford acquired Ferrari, one of the first things they were planning on donig was eliminating the Formula One division and concentration only on Road Racing, so maybe it's best they didn't buy

I'm surprised cars like this (Non-American body, American drivetrain, awesome car) don't make mcnut's head explode.
