Description:
"Chevy Camaro Race Car. 500hp uses pump gas, Forest Green with black stripes tan interior, 383 small block Chevy, ported aluminum heads, aluminum radiator, billet pullies, 71,000 original miles, mint body and interior, automatic. 11.60 quarter mile, turn key. Price: $12,500"

I love it except for the automatic tranny. No Camaro should ever have an automatic.

This car rules... and as someone who can't drive a manual tranny car, I like it even more.

Is this really a sleeper?
I don't think it is. Reason its not to me is that camaros aren't exactly known for being a slow car and the 2-3 inch cowl on the hood sort of throws out the sleeper image as well.
Hard to make a "sleeper" that starts out as a muslce car to begin with.

11.6 for 12K... I'd be all over that. That is why RWD V8's still kick ass.

I used to be a manual man... now I like automatics... especially for the city driving I do with a toddler in the backseat and trying to hand french fries over to him :)

A good built automatic can shift harder and faster than a manual... especially good for drag racing to get consistent testable times.

But heck yeah, manuals are fuuuuun!

#7, [Off-topic]

Speaking of French Fries, my McDonald's just got something different... it's called "Apple Dippers"...it's on our Dollar Menu, and can also be put in a happy meal as a fry-alternative... it's a small plastic bag of chilled apple slices, and you get a container of caramel dip... I'd buy it, but I already have apples and caramel dip at home, even before I heard MickeyD's was gonna do this...

I've driven a manual... on a ford ranger... not very fun... long throws, bad clutch... atleast i know how to drive a manual now (the ranger was my first manual vehicle)

I sorta know how to drive a manual...but not in a car... I used to ride a motorcycle.

I bet I coule pick up driving a manual car rather easily, but probably not right off the bat...seeing as a motorcycle's manual set up is all ass-backwards compared to a car...

#7, They're more consistent, but they don't shift faster. The manuals still have the advantage there.

This car is practically my dream Camaro, apart from the damn cowl hood. I'm getting to the point that I hate those things on every car.

I remember reading and/or hearing about a Ferrari trnsmission that shifted faster than it would be humanly possible to shift a stick.

#11, mebbe production stuff... but a really built TH350 (for example) with a stiff shift kit can go faster than I ever could slamming through gears... still gotta slap the clutch down, change the gear, and then release the clutch...

don't have any data to back this up of course - just by feel here

#13, I asked some of the guys at the MCSS site - here was one reply -"well, its the auto in every case, unless the auto is broken. its kinda hard to shift a shift lever 3 inches faster then an muto trans that only has to move a band a quarter inch or less with over 300 lbs of line pressure to do the job.

now, generally, the manual transmissions have the better ratios, which make up for the slower shifting."

sounds good to me

#14, That same transmission would also be impossible to drive on the street.

You have to factor in the higher rpm shift points and hard shifts of a tranny like that. On the street, a manual is going to offer superior performance. This is why they're still in production, and why most hard-core performance cars don't offer automatics (most of the fastest ones use semi-autos).

#18, true... I said average non-drag performance and manual will be better... but still if you wanna do it right the built auto is going to be able to shift faster than anything else out there...but having said that the manual usually beats out the auto for daily street driving because they have more available gears - but that has nothing to do with the speed of the actual shift.

I think most sports cars are supposed to have manuals... not because of a performance advantage in the speed of the shift.. but in the enjoyment that people get out of doing it... manuals are fun and I'll never deny that! It's great to downshift before a corner, and then have the car in a good power band spot as you exit out of the turn... it's hard to have the auto do that right, they have a tendency to hunt for gears or go into overdrive etc at the wrong time...
