#16, Methinks you need to open your eyes to companies that have less of a red white and blue tint to them. Youre in the minority here and everywhere else that has a lick of sense about cars thinking domestics are superior to imports. Im not getting any further into the age-old debate about which is better, because when it comes to the facts that were presented to me on http://www.jdpowers.com, my car is superior to about 80% of the cars (more than 80% in its own midsize class) that have rolled off the domestic assembly lines since the year 2000.
My initial point still stands updisputed. American car companies need to stop selling their really good cars to only foreign shores. I think that would really clean up their crappy and unreliable image so many people have.
Another point- you, Obsidian, remind me of a big GM advertisement.

#20, dude. My grandma said the Century felt too chintzy for her. She said the same of a Grand Prix and an Impala. She would up buying a 2.7L Intrepid, which she is selling now. She is looking at Chargers and 300s. Mind you the Intrepid is a 2000 model with over 90k on it. |

#21, And you come off as being conceeded and living inside a "Roger and Me" world - a wonderful 30 year old greenhouse where you never have to step outside.
Again - this is 2005 now. Not 2000 or 2002. Alot of quality gains have been made since then - but the bias works both ways. Whereas you'll se me as only pro-US - I can see you as pro-Japan.
You don't know that at all.
For the record - I don't buy into it for the flag waving (in fact it's not even my flag).
EDIT: An ad!? I'm honored to be called an ad!

Fuck. I had a really good rant in here, then I hit my mouse which happened to be hovering over the back button. I hate it when that happens.

Japanese cars and American cars are equal in my opinion, but it wasn't always like that, domestic cars, up until recently, weren't all that great gas mileage wise or performance wise unless you were willing to spend a great deal of money... |

#21, Waitaminute....
I'm in the minority? I wonder why the "big 2.5" still have 60% of the US market and GM still has a 14.6% global share.
Granted the golden days of glory are long gone - but I'm not in any minority....yet. |

#32, How punctual. The big 2.5 as you so elegantly put it, have 60% of the US market thanks to their trucks, which are not under scrutiny. Its their cars that have always had the catching up to do. |

My family is a Toyota family. We had a Plymouth Volare and it was a real piece of junk. Since then, my parents have only bought Toyotas [/$0.02] |

#33, That is cars and trucks -both. Cumulative sales from both. Don't pull an RRB and say they don't make money off of cars anymore.
You know - what the 2.5 makes that isn't based off a truck that the press won't comment on. Something that you seemingly overlook in comparison to an Accord built in 1990. |

What do I overlook? The fact that the Japanese companies barely profit from truck sales? The fact that your precious JD Powers rates my car as high as modern domestic equivalents? (1992, to nitpick)
Btw, my saying trucks were not under scrutiny was meant to say that Im not stupid enough to think the Japanese can truly compete with us. Hell, a good majority of "Japanese" trucks are domestic enough to piss of a riceboy.
Youre reading into things too much. From the beginning, Ive been comparing normal, every day cars. Not sports models or trucks or anything else. Just the average Joe, plain Jane sedans and coupes. Have I spouted VTEC rhetoric? No. (btw, whats your stance on Nissan's VVL or GMs ecotec or whatever?) Have I been a Japanese fanboy? No. Its like arguing with a fucking brick.

#34, Thats just the reason my family is a Honda family. Too many bad experiences with the various domestics weve all driven.
(for lengths sake, I had to start another post) |

Yeah, the Volare was always breaking down. My mom says that one time when I was little it broke down in the middle of a 2 lane suspnsion bridge. Not long after that, I believe we sold it to some sucker. The only problems we've had with the Toyotas are:
1. One time I left the door open on my brother's Tercel, draning the battery (nothing to do with reliability)
2. Once the hood on my dad's T100 nearly flew open (he didn't shut it hard enough)
3. One time when it was really cold my mom's Camry wouldn't start, which is understandable. |

#36, MY precious JDpower? Hardly. They're an standarized industy benchmark and show no favourtism. I'm just using them as that benchmark to prove my point. I don't doubt that the Japs have had JD under their belt for a quite few years now and rightfully so. But - much to your displeasure - times have change and even the lofty can fall from their pearch.
I do know that Toyota does have a Tundra plant in Texas - but that alone doesn't make them "Domestic" (the defination of imported and domestic has never changed since the dawn of trade). Same with saying that typical GM car X was "probably built" in country X so that it could be used as fodder in spats when someone says GM is less "domestic" then foriegn brand X.
My numbers say that GM has 52 US plants in operation compared to 5 in Canada - 3 in Mexico - 2 in Korea - and 1 in Oz; just for the US market.
Of course - GM is downsizing - so the plant numbers are probably off. |
