Description:
Wangan Midnight.

The Anime series just started airing last week, but the manga it's based on started back in 1992 (and is still running, IIRC).

The Anime is produced by many of the same people that make the Initial D anime... and this has a very similar feel. But rather than touge racing, it's high-speed freeway racing. With a bit of "Christine" thrown in for measure.

#106, It attracts the biggest fanboys in the US due to a stupid movie, most of which have the same ricer mentality and can't shut up about it.

Dirf - you're the resident all things Japansese expert. Wiki says there was only 26 episodes of Wangan. Is that just the first season, or all of it, implying it's no longer being run?

#107, It's still being aired.. two episodes a month on Japanese Pay-Per-View. It should be wrapping up soon.

[edit] ...while I got you here, what's the status of you considering a Ninja 250R?

I should note... the constant introduction and departure of minor characters is a result of them trying to compress 15 years of manga into a 26-episode series.

I had some medical issues come up lately which took a significant chunk of cash out of my pocket. That combined with the demand and timing (riding season) pushes the Ninja back at least 3-4 months.
Still looking for a dealer who can work with me too - never heard back from the local one.

So there's only 26 episodes of this and no more?
I thought it would be an ongoing series.

#111, It's a series of limited appeal... only mass-appeal series like DragonBall Z and InuYasha* have the profitability to get long-running anime adaptations. Wangan Midnight was lucky to get even a 26-episode adaptation.

The manga, which has been running since the early '90s, is still ongoing, though. Sadly, no American licensor has ever expressed interest in bringing the manga nor the anime to our shores.

*Those are two series I have never actually seen.

...sorry to hear about the difficulties in getting your hands on that bike. I wish you the best with your continued pursuit of it :)

I don't really think it's very good when a series has a ridiculously long run. If a series is just 24-26 (or, in some cases, 48-52) episodes long, it tends to have a plot with a distinct beginning and end. When a series gets much longer than that, the best you can really hope for is that it'll have individual sub-plot arcs that are somewhat coherent.

Just finished it up, and all I can say is it was a wonderful series, but something felt off about the ending. Its nowhere near as bad as Inuyashas "ending" though, 250+ episodes and you get that crap?!?!?!

#114, I kinda stalled out in my viewing of it... I'm up to episode 13, and even though I've downloaded up through episode 22, I haven't gotten around to watching any more of it.

This was one of the few series that neded more episodes, 52 at least, its a good show but the show is too much a logjam of info for 26 episodes

#118, Nein. I guess it's way too niche... who needs a car racing anime when hundreds of cutesy high school dramedies can be licensed? Oh well. :(

Well...uh... I finally finished this series.

Towards the end, we finally got side characters that stuck around for longer than an episode or two, and the conclusion of the series was very satisfying... not really a "finale" type of conclusion, but still quite good.
