People see the freedom of religion in the wrong way sometimes. Some people make up their own religions that involve illegal drugs, crimes, hate, or pure insanity and think they have a RIGHT to have their religion and they should be protected from any legal respobsibility because "it's their religion and they have to be protected". That's a bunch of crap. Freedom from religion doesn't mean you can do ANYTHING you call religion...it meant that the founders could practice their religion WITH freedom from being beat and thrown in jail for doing it differently than the King of England likes it done.

my point remains, though. The founders founded the US in part for religious freedom, but if you'll notice, they built the country so you could have religious freedom in any way you wanted as long as it didn't break any laws. And some people interpret freedom of religion to mean freedom from religion. And that's their right.

I don't know why you bring up shit like that, munkee, it has nothing to do with Newdow. He's an atheist who doesn't want his children exposed to religion. That's all. The only religion I can think of that's like you described is Scientology.

If you want the government to recognise Buddha, go live in India...if you want to live under a government that recognizes Allah, put a towel on your head and go to the middle east, want to worship the sun...go to Brazil. People need to stop thinking America owes them and read their history books...America WAS founded upon Christianity and that's simply it's culture. If you go to another country, you have to respect their cultures...so why is America an exception? You have to dress like them, SPEAK LIKE THEM (don't get me started on making English the national language so we don't have to have 4 sets of instructions on every toilet), and respect their culture in other countries...have the same respect for USA.

Then he should home school them...another "right" in this country.

And what if I want to worship nothing, where shall I go. You can have respect for your country without being a certain reiligon.

#22 - EXACTLY! If the religious freedom that started this country is to remain...then we can't eliminate religions from people who get offended easily. That's communism and the exact OPPOSITE of the USA.

Munkee, what the fuck? America was founded by Christians, yes, but they built it so you could come here with any religion you want and not be persecuted. But you want to persecute people. You're saying we make Christianity the official religion of the US and English the official language. So what you're saying, is lets kick "all them damn darkies out of this here country." What's the problem with buddha, or wearing clothing deemed necessary by your religion?

And just to clarify, he has said nothing about banning religion. He's just trying to eliminate religion in government-run schools, which is entirely appropriate I think. You must remember, public schools are generally the only secular schools in the nation, almost every private school has a religious bent.

You don't have to BE a certain religion in the USA...but you have to respect and allow others to practice the religion the country was founded upon. That would be like me coming into your home, uninvited and a total stranger, and taking things out of your home that I don't like. Let's say I don't like the color blue and you have a blue Camaro...poof, I push it off a cliff and say you can't have another because I don't like blue and I'm protected by the 1st Amendment? See what I am saying? If we let ONE person sue to get their own way, it will set a court precedent that MUST be followed from now on. Like the hot coffee lawsuits, only on a bigger scale, people will sue and be protected by that court decision whenever they don't like ANYTHING. People over time will come into this country and we'll have a hellhole instead of "the land of the free".

#30 - Like I said...if we let one person ban it in one place...we won't be able to stop them from banning anything that they don't like in any place. ALL FREEDOMS WHATSOEVER will be at risk.

You're drawing way too much out of this, munkee. He is simply an athiest who doesn't want his children exposed to religion in government-funded schools. And more power to him, I say.

You don't just have to respect just the reiligion that founded the US, you have to respect all religions no matter what they seem like to you. So what if they don't do the same as you, you probably look just as weird to them going to church on sundays and eating crackers.

You are not seeing the legal ramifications of a court precedent like this being set, we'll have to cater to every person's request...BY LAW.

You're missing my point, munkee. IT IS ILLEGAL for the government to support one religion over another. It has to support them all equally, regardless of size, or support none of them. Those are the only two options. Forcing children to say the pledge of allegiance, is, indirectly, a confirmation by the government that there IS a god, and that there is only ONE, which is supporting one religion over another, and hence, illegal. Get it? Yes, it wasn't on purpose, and if it was voluntary it wouldn't count, but the fact remains.

I never said to disrespect other religions...but you cannot eliminate the one that founded the country just because someone is "offended". Liberalism is about as bad as communism in the way they try to be politically correct and take away freedoms just so they don't offend "this one little group of people over there".

I don't see where you're getting all this bullshit from. He didn't sue to government to ban religion from the nation, or anything of the sort. And to draw ramifications along those lines would be clouded thinking.

You can't eliminate any, not just the one that founded the country.
