I still stand by my original statement. I can see both sides of this argument. The "under God" bit never particularly bothered me, because I never cared to interpret it literally, but I can see how it might bother some.

I really don't care one way or another, because I don't like the pledge. To me, memorizing a speech before you're even old enough to know what the words mean doesn't mean that you have allegiance to the flag. And why would you pledge to the flag? Why not the country? The country itself is more important than it's flag.

Personally, I don't think patriotism should be forced, because then it isn't patriotism. But for those who do have allegiance, they should each have their own pledge, not an endorsed, "agreed upon" one.

One reason that I am concerned about this, however, is it does seem to be turning the majority of the country against atheists, and in a place like this that is VERY scary.

#169, No, nothing is going to end up like the South Park christmas episode. That's carrying it a bit too far, mainly because Christmas isn't a Christian holiday anymore, it's a glazed over secularized national holiday.

#167, Difference between "patriotism" and "nationalism", there. I don't really view this bandwagon stuff as true patriotism. It lacks the education and understanding the proper use of the word "patriotism" would imply.

168: You've got a point.

#169, You're already living in a (mostly) secularized society.
